Also, with any newborn comes the things you try as a parent to calm the new baby. Here are a few:
Holding Emma in my lap while messing with a potato chip bag (noise she likes) and her staring at the ceiling fan
She loves high contrast things to look at (dark frames against white wall, windows, etc.)
Driving her around the block in her carseat at 3am
Sitting in my car with music on at 3am as to not wake Mommy

what is it with babies and ceiling fans?? :) oliver loves staring at his too... and it's still winter here, so it's not even moving! i remember one of my cousins being fascinated by it as a baby as well.
try the vacuum cleaner for white noise as well. if oliver was over tired or just plain fussy, i swear as soon as i would fire up the vacuum he would fall asleep. now, of course, it just wakes him up...
